Combine Research and Management
The PhD in Technology Management (TM) is designed to meet growing industry and academic needs by offering a quality doctoral program to both part-time and full-time students in two inter-related areas:
- New technology venture creation (e.g. entrepreneurship and corporate venturing), and
- Select current and emerging technologies (technology concentrations).

- 30 course credit hours
- 15 PhD dissertation credit hours

A Unique and Interdisciplinary Science Degree
The program will encompass an integrated multi-disciplinary technology and management approach. The PhD-TM program is specifically designed to develop interdisciplinary skills and competencies in research and management of technology-dependent enterprises, technology-based entrepreneurship and new product, service and venture creation.
While the PhD-TM is housed in the Department of Technology Management, the PhD degree facilitates and encourages interdisciplinary studies across the School of Engineering and other schools and utilizes their complementary research facilities, faculty and lab resources.
The PhD degree is a certification of critical aptitude in scholarship, creativity, knowledge in the discipline, enterprise in research, and proficiency and style in communication.
Career Opportunities
Students in the PhD in Technology Management program have several teaching opportunities to create assignments for MS students, host lectures and receive teaching evaluations so they are prepared to apply to academic positions. Successful graduates are also well-positioned to apply for community-oriented service and non-profit board positions due to the networking opportunities provided in the program.
UB’s PhD in Technology Management program is designed for research-oriented students and industry professionals who are highly interested in conducting research in a diverse range of technology management related fields. Upon completion, graduates will have advanced research skills to serve in both academic and research institutions.

UB Expert Faculty
Ruba Deeb, PhD
Dr. Deeb joined the UB community in 2015, where she currently serves as the Director of Biomedical Research Development and the Director of the Collaborative Biomedical Research Center (CBRC). She is also a Research Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering & Technology Management.
Over the last 20 years, Dr. Deeb has worked with a diverse team of investigators on unraveling the pathophysiology of lung and cardio-metabolic diseases. During that period, she was an assistant Professor of Pathology and of Genetic Medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Her research has focused on mechanisms that regulate inflammatory processes as they relate to metabolic networks with the goal to discover disease biomarkers, monitor disease progression, and measure the efficacy of therapeutic intervention. Her current research projects are centered around the regeneration of the human airway following exposure to cigarette smoke, and minimizing permanent damage caused by lung disease.
Elif Kongar, PhD
Dr. Elif Kongar is a Professor of Technology Management and Mechanical Engineering, and Chair of the Technology Management Department at the School of Engineering, University of Bridgeport. Dr. Kongar has been utilizing various quantitative and qualitative tools and techniques in her interdisciplinary and technology-driven research. She has published over one hundred well-cited papers in scholarly journals and conference proceedings. Her research areas include economically and environmentally sustainable waste recovery systems and operations, disassembly sequencing and planning, electronic waste, performance evaluation, big data and data analytics, quality improvement, engineering education programs, female participation and efficiency in engineering disciplines, and K-12 STEM education. Dr. Kongar is the Department Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management and an active member of various national and international technical committees, advisory boards, program committees and editorial boards.
Nasir Sheikh, PhD
Dr. Nasir Sheikh is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Technology Management at University of Bridgeport. Dr. Sheikh was a founding tenure-track faculty in the Department of Technology and Society, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at State University of New York, Korea from 2013 to 2017. He is teaching courses such as data science, entrepreneurship, leadership, computer networking, strategic marketing, technology assessment, and quality management. He has taught over twenty-five graduate and undergraduate courses. His research interests include technological innovation and commercialization, technology assessment, decision modeling, and analytics and has over twenty publications. Dr. Sheikh has over thirty-five years of industry experience in building global information and communications technologies (ICT) businesses as an executive in technology management, sales, and marketing. He has served in business leadership roles at Atlas Telecom, UshaComm, CenterSpan Communications, and ACD Systems.
