If you are looking to teach students grades 7-12, we encourage you to explore our initial teacher certification program for secondary education. You can complete the MS in Secondary Education Degree program as either an intern or a traditional student, whichever works best with your busy lifestyle.
The University of Bridgeport offers a variety of Secondary Education degree program options to pursue, each of which prepares students who have a strong content knowledge in these areas for successful teaching careers.
The program seeks to develop teachers who can accomplish all of the following:
- Understand and apply essential skills, central concepts, and tools of inquiry in their subject matter or field.
- Promote student engagement, independence, and interdependence in learning by facilitating a positive learning community.
- Plan and Implement instruction in order to engage students in rigorous and relevant learning and to promote their curiosity.
- Use multiple measures to analyze student performance and to inform subsequent planning and instruction.
- Maximize support for student learning by developing and demonstrating professionalism, collaboration with others, and leadership.
If you already have a master’s degree, you can complete the program at a 6th Year Certificate of Advanced Study level.
Tuition Paid Internship
UB is home to the first tuition-paid internship program in the country and trains more Connecticut teachers than any other school in the state. UB works closely with 60+ school districts in Connecticut and Westchester, NY.
Our students earn a Master's degree and initial Connecticut teaching certification in a secondary subject area which emphasizes evidence-based practice combined with a strong understanding of pedagogy and content knowledge in the subject area.

Joanna A. Badara, PhD
Joanna A. Badara, PhD is an Associate Professor of Education and Chair of the Hybrid EdD program in Educational Leadership. At UB, she has developed and taught courses in the School of Education, Physician Assistant Institute, and the School of Arts & Sciences. Badara has mentored numerous doctoral dissertation research projects, and her own research has been focused on the professional development of teachers, STEM education, and neuroscience applied to education.
Afrah Richmond, PhD
Afrah Richmond, PhD is currently an Assistant Professor of Social Studies at the University of Bridgeport School of Education. She received her PhD from NYU School of Education in 2011. She was a teacher and administrator at Benjamin Banneker Academy for Community Development in Brooklyn, NY from 1999 until 2009. Her current book project is on race and education in the New York public schools.
Patricia Mulcahy-Ernt, PhD
Dr. Mulcahy-Ernt, Professor and Director of the Graduate-level Literacy and Secondary English Education Programs, has taught at UB for more than 25 years. She has taught and administered programs in 5 states in 7-12 grades and university settings. She holds a doctorate from the University of Minnesota in Educational Psychology with a focus on cognition, literacy, and evaluation. Her interdisciplinary literacy research has applications for secondary-level and college-level students, including English as a Second Language Learners. Currently, she serves on the Board of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education representing the College Reading and Learning Association.
